We’re nearing the end of the first week of 2016! That means the acceptable time for reflection on 2015 is almost done (or perhaps it’s gone already, but I’m ignoring that possibility).
Near the end of 2014, I became enamored with YouTube. Why didn’t anyone tell me that YT could be for more than just music videos, interviews with celebs, and funny animal videos?! I was slow to the uptake, but then I committed (via starting my channel) and fell in love. YouTube and me, we haven’t looked back since and it feels like my 2015 reflections wouldn’t be complete without sharing some of my favorite videos.
This list could’ve gone on for ages so I’ve placed limits on myself. Videos like “Anna Kendrick’s Booty vs. John Krasinski’s Proud Mary | Lip Sync Battle” were taken out because this will be just YouTuber content. I also didn’t include any small YouTuber videos because I love a lot of small YouTubers and that’s a category that deserves a post of its own. Long story short: this list is wildly incomplete, but here are five videos from 2015 that I think are awesome!
Will Darbyshire – The Beach
Young love, sunshine, the ocean – this two minute video is seemingly simple but somehow makes me feel both happy and nostalgic at the same time. Even though I haven’t had that exact experience, watching it conjures up feelings of carefree youth and the joy of spending the day outside someplace beautiful with someone you love, followed by wistful sadness that days like this can’t last forever. I like Will’s chatty videos a lot, but for some reason this simple beach video really stuck with me.
Mamrie Hart & Tyler Oakley – Ya Busted
These two are funny separately, but put them together and give ’em a drink and hilarity ensues. Mamrie’s Claire’s Fashion Jewelry & Accessories joke is my favorite.
The Michelaks – Walking on Egg Shells
The Michelaks (Stef, Hannah, and their son Grayson) are a British vlogging family. Since they vlog weekly, their videos are regularly 30 minutes long. Don’t let that put you off! It’s worth investing as much time in them as you would a TV show. Make sure to watch this video until the end – the climactic moment in the park is so beautiful it makes me a little emosh every time I watch it.
When I started watching them in 2015, Gracie was an almost bald little baby who couldn’t speak. Now he’s almost 2 with a full head of blonde hair, and he walks, puts words together, and has developed quite the personality! Not only are their vlogs really artistic and special, but the Michelaks are super down to earth, run a small business, and are successfully raising a polite, bright little boy.
TheThirdPew – Stop Worshiping YouTubers (RE: YouTube Culture)
This was my first Nathan Zed video! He’s a college kid YouTuber – so young but brilliant and an unbelievably fast talker. He tells it like it is and has fantastic editing to boot. “I’m going to be so frank with you that you’re going to think that I’ve changed my name,” he says at the beginning of this video and he lives up to this promise whilst breaking down his thoughts about YouTube celebrity culture.
Ingrid Nilsen – Something I Want You To Know (Coming Out)
This video was clearly emotional for Ingrid to make and it was emotional for me to watch. Witnessing someone change their life for the better and free themselves from the facade they’ve lived behind for so many years is a really powerful thing. Nothing but love for Ingrid for making herself vulnerable to the world and speaking her truth!
